Hobby Horse ‘Rookie Rewards’ Program for Novice Show Riders

How about a special show class to spotlight and reward show-ring rookies? Hobby Horse Clothing Company, a show apparel maker, saw a need for a rookie classes at open and breed shows and created their ‘Rookie Rewards’ program in 2008. And what a success: last year, more than 150 open horse shows offered more than 300 Rookie Rewards classes and gave out more than $30,000 in prizes. The program is offered again in 2009.

“We want to encourage novice riders in the show ring,” says Hobby Horse president Suzanne Vlietstra. She explains “Most shows celebrate the high-point winners, but we wanted to do something for those with less show experience. Our Rookie Rewards walt-trot western horsemanship class tests the skills of riders who have not yet won three blue ribbons, then rewards them with gift certificates and ribbons that we provide free to the show,” she says.

Rookie Rewards class winners receive a $100 Hobby Horse gift certificate, and ribbons are provided for first through fifth place. Shows can register online for the program, and the class specifications and pattern can also be downloaded by exhibitors and shows.

62nd National Championship Appaloosa Show

2009 World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show

Show dates for the 2009 National Show/World Youth Show in Jackson, MS are:

June 22 – 29, 2009 – 62nd National Championship Appaloosa Show

June 29 – July 4 – World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show

The decision to hold the National Show week to be followed by the Youth Show was made due to conflicts that many of our youth competitors who live in the northeast have with the previous format. Later dates for school dismissal combined with mandatory state testing requirements eliminated many youth members from competition at the 2008 show. For that reason, the board of directors’ show committee voted to make this scheduling change for 2009 and 2010. This will be reconsidered for the 2011 show as show dates for that year may change.

The schedule for the show is currently available on the ApHC Web site.

Please contact the ApHC Performance Department at 208.882.5578 ext. 400 with any questions that you may have.
